REGULAR MEMBERSHIP

REGULAR MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be a secular newspaper of general circulation;
  2. Frequency of publication must be at least weekly;
  3. Must have published for at least one year (52 consecutive weeks); and then at least 50 weeks in each subsequent year;
  4. Must have a minimum of 4 pages each issue and contain at least 100 square inches of printed matter per page
  5. Must be printed by conventional and generally recognized printing processes (i.e. not on a copy machine)
  6. Must annually average at least 25% news content per issue (“news content” meaning any printed matter other than advertising)
  7. Must upload all public notices to the statewide website (www.publicnoticeillinois.com)
  8. The newspaper content must convey a commitment to local news coverage
  9. We require all regular member publications to contain an identification statement (masthead). It must appear in easy-to-read type within the first five pages of the issue. If you currently hold a periodical permit this information is already required. The following information is required for publications that don’t mail or hold a postal permit for distribution.

    3. Volume & Issue Number (may be on cover)
    4. Statement of Frequency
    5. Annual Subscription Price (if applicable)
    6. Single Copy Price (if applicable)

Legal Consultation and Hotline:  The IPA retains an experienced media law attorney to help answer members’ legal questions and concerns.

Government Relations: The IPA is dedicated to protecting rights and media-related interests at the state level, including openness and transparency in government through the Open Meetings Act, open records, FOIA, public notices, etc.

Advocacy: The IPA serves as an advocate for the newspaper industry.  We strive to promote the vitality and longevity of newspapers, and to give our members the tools and information to do the same.

Paid Advertising:  The IPA includes member’s information in their advertising database. This database is used by associations, agencies and advertisers to find advertising information on Illinois newspapers.  The IPA also makes it a priority to sell into IPA member newspapers.

Annual Convention: At the IPA and Illinois Press Foundation’s annual convention, informed speakers and industry experts will give you information and ideas to take home and implement right away at your newspaper.  You also get the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with other members, industry experts and service providers.

Membership Directory:  IPA members receive access to the IPA Membership Directory.

Newspaper Contests & Awards:  Annual newspaper contests, both advertising and editorial, recognize excellence among our membership – and give you bragging rights for the year!  The annual awards ceremony is held in conjunction with the annual convention.

Advertising Network Opportunities:  Join and sell into two statewide advertising networks.  Make extra money by running small display ads and/or classified ads each week and make even more money by selling into the network.  Members can receive a “pool” check twice a year by simply running ads each week for the IPA.  Members can earn substantially more by selling customers into the network and will receive an instant 50 percent commission.  For more information, contact Charlene Frank at cfrank@illinoispress.org call 217-241-1700.

Training:  The IPA and Illinois Press Foundation sponsors and assists in the coordination of free or low-cost training and webinars on a wide variety of topics that are useful to your newspapers.

Visibility:  As a member of the Illinois Press Association, you will be listed in our membership directory.  This directory is used by associations, agencies and advertisers to find information on Illinois newspapers.

Legal Defense Fund: The Illinois Newspaper Legal Defense Fund provides quality legal research, consultation and court action in cases where the outcome will affect the Illinois newspaper industry as a whole. 

Press Cards:  Regular members will receive free press cards which acknowledge IPA membership and interest in a high standard of professional ethics.  These credentials assist law enforcement and other public agencies to identify members of the press and facilitate easier access to events and news venues.

  1. Regular Membership Application
  2. One newspaper from the last four months published (four total newspapers). 
  3. Current advertising rate card.

Once all material is received, your application will be submitted to the IPA Board of Directors for approval.

 

ABOUT OUR DUES

Your dues investment is determined by your advertising rate card.  Our calculation is your national rate (open rate if you do not have a national rate) x 45, billed annually.  For example, if your national rate is $20.25, your annual dues would be $911.00.

Allied Membership

ALLIED MEMBERSHIP

ALLIED MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Allied members are a firm, corporation or organization engaged in furnishing machinery, supplies or services to publishers, or commercial printing establishments, in the State or otherwise, interested in the promotion of the interests of the newspaper industry.

ALLIED MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

Advertisements:  Allied members will receive 1 1/4 page color ad in our digital trade publication (PressLInes) which runs quarterly, and an ad on our website for one year.     

Annual Convention:  Allied members are invited to attend convention at member rates.  You get the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with other members, industry experts and service providers.  You will also receive a 25% discount off exhibitor space at convention.  Space is based on availability.

Associate Membership

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

For non-allied businesses, associations or organizations who wish to cultivate or extend a relationship with the newspaper industry in Illinois.  Additionally, publications that don’t meet the requirements of regular membership can be associate members; however, these publications are not eligible to enter the annual Association advertising and editorial contests.  The classification includes those entities that want to establish and maintain contacts with the decision makers at over 370 publications statewide.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

Digital News Media Membership

DIGITAL NEWS MEDIA MEMBERSHIP

DIGITAL NEWS MEDIA MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

To qualify you must be engaged in producing news for Digital News publication or dissemination within the State of Illinois.

 

  1. The Digital News publication shall have been published continuously for a previous 12-month period from date of membership application;
  2. The Digital News publication shall be continuously published and updated not less than once per week;
  3. The Digital News publication shall average at least 25% original local or general news content; In addition, all applications must demonstrate, to the IPA Board of Directors satisfaction, a significant commitment to bona fide news content, including evidence of local original news coverage.
  4. The Digital News publication shall publish reading matter to include announcements, news and information concerning current happenings and passing events of a political, social, religious, commercial, financial or legal nature, and advertisements or bulletins;
  5. The Digital News publication shall be of a secular nature and shall not serve primarily as a platform to promote the interest, opinions, beliefs or views of a specific individual, group or cause;
  6. The Digital News publication shall abide by Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) standards; but only to the extent that they wish to participate in Association advertising placement networks;
  7. The Digital News publication shall abide by all applicable United States copyright and trademark laws.
  8. Newspapers already belonging to the Illinois Press Association and in good standing shall, if applicable, have requirement (1) waived in the event that they wish to convert to a Digital News only publication.
  9. Any regular member that produces an actual print edition of the newspaper and also maintains a Digital News newspaper/publication shall not be eligible for Digital News only membership.

Academic Membership

ACADEMIC MEMBERSHIP

 

ACADEMIC MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

 

To qualify you must be high school, college, university or other campus newspaper or digital edition published by full-time students.   Publication must conform to the following criteria:

  1. Printed in an accepted newspaper format (standard or tabloid size) or published online.
  2. Published on an announced, regular schedule or, as relates to a Web site.
  3. Content updated no less than twice a month.
  4. Must follow the ethics and standards generally of professional print journalism.
  5. Publish, verify, and submit accurate circulation figures to the Association.
  6. Prepared entirely by students, except for mechanical assistance or assistance by faculty advisors.
